Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was born in the 15th century during a period of political and religious turmoil in India. Nanak founded a new religion, a synthesis of Hinduism and Islam, with the belief that God was one. He advocated a casteless society based on truth, brotherhood, and equality. He spent twenty-three years traveling not only in India but also to Tibet, Ceylon and Central Asian countries of Arabia, Iran and Iraq, preaching the truth as he had perceived it and showing mankind the path to salvation.
