Summary of the Book

Author has kept things true to the sunject, relality and kept away from wide imagination. Its a history book must read for those who want to read Maratha history with broad perspective. All credit to the author. Fantastic narration.

This is the definitive book on the third battle of Panipat. The author spent about a decade researching various aspects of the battle from original sources, and also traveled to the location(s) of the battle (the plural since the Maratha lines were roughly 5 miles wide on that day, spanning 3 villages, and the Afghan lines were 3 miles even wider), trying to understand the tactics and battle movements on the day of the battle. While he brings to the subject the broadest scholarship, one feels that his greatest contribution is in the synthesis of various sources. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the third battle of Panipat. It was written after Jadunath Sarkar's "Fall of the Mughal empire" which contains a lengthy description of the battle, and was regarded as the definitive account before Shejwalkar. Shejwalkar, I believe, supercedes it comfortably, though reading both these accounts does provide important counterpoints to ponder over.
