पेशवाईच्या उत्तरार्धात प्रवीण पतंगेच्या खापरपणजोबांनी-उदाजीरावांनी- अनेक नाविक पराक्रम केले आणि अखेरीस `जय मल्हार’ नावाचे गुराबा जातीचे एक लढाऊ जहाज घेऊन चाचे लोकांचा पाठलाग करीत त्यांनी पूर्वेकडे धाव घेतली. मात्र हे खापरपणजोबा जपानपर्यंतच जाऊन थांबले नाहीत. पुढेही समुद्रात त्यांनी आपले जहास घुसविले आणि त्यानंतर त्यांचा पत्ताच लागला नाही.
पुढे त्या जहाजाचा शोध घेण्याच्या प्रयत्न जयाजीराव पतंगे-प्रवीणच्या वडिलांनी केला. त्यांनी आठ शिडांचे जहाज खरेदी केले. या आठ शिडांच्या रूपाने दिक्पाल आपले रक्षण करतील या विश्र्वासाने या जहाजाला नाव दिले अष्टावसू आणि ते सफरीवर निघाले. `जय मल्हार’च्या शोधात एका `भुताळी जहाजा’ने त्यांना मार्गदर्शन केले. ज्या चाचे लोकांच्या मागावर त्यांचे पणजोबा गेले त्यांनी प्रचंड खजिना लुटलेला होता. पण या खजिन्याने प्रवीणच्या वडिलांचाही बळी घेतला. तदनंतर या पूर्वजांच्या जहाजाचा शोध घेण्याची जबाबदारी वारसदार म्हणून या पुस्तकाच्या नायकावर- प्रवीण पतंगेवर येते.
