Summary of the Book
Baja, to most Indians, is a generic name for all musical instruments. As gramophones and gramophone records entered the plebian consciousness, they too were included in the wide baja clan. Naama (more correctly namah) is a Persian word that loosely means story and biography. 'Bajanaama' is meant to imply 'the story of the gramophone record'.
This book is by a private collector of gramaphone records. He was a civil servant who came upon a compilation of recordings from 1902-1910 manufactured by the Gramaphone company, authored by Michael Kinnear. The book includes the very first recordings of Indian voices and is basically about the first decade of commercial recordings in India.
